2023 PCD Artist Project; October 22, 2023
Today’s featured artist is Cheyenne L with her submission titled “Hold my Hand”. Something that really went into this drawing that I kept thinking about was when I was pregnant with my third child, after my second was born with PCD, the fear I felt knowing he had a 25% chance of having PCD was crippling. And my husband said to me “yes, he has a 25% chance of having PCD.. but a 100% chance of being loved.” I couldn’t think of a way to incorporate that into the drawing, because that’s a lot of words but still something I thought was worth sharing.” ~ Cheyenne L
“Primary ciliary dyskinesia usually follows autosomal recessive genetic inheritance. Recessive genetic disorders occur when an individual inherits the same abnormal gene for the same trait from each parent. If an individual receives one normal gene and one gene for the disease, the person will be a carrier for the disease, but usually will not show symptoms. The risk for two carrier parents to both pass the defective gene and, therefore, have an affected child is 25% with each pregnancy. The risk to have a child who is a carrier like the parents is 50% with each pregnancy. The chance for a child to receive normal genes for a given trait from both parents and be genetically normal for that particular trait is 25%. The risk is the same for males and females.” ~ National Organization for Rare Disorders
The PCD Artist Project is a collaborative effort by artist to raise awareness for PCD or primary ciliary dyskinesia and support the PCD Smiles program. Each artist who submitted art work to the project either has PCD or has a PCD friend or family member.
