“PCD has been first described in 1936, and the first causative gene has been reported in 1999. Since that time, PCD has become recognized as a highly heterogeneous dis- ease. To date, over 50 causative genes have been discovered, with a family and/or population-specific range of mutations found among patients. Despite the high number of genes associated with PCD pathogenesis, the genetic cause of the disease in approximately 30% of patients remains unclear. Therefore, it is important to search for new candidate PCD genes and to investigate their role in motile cilia biology.” ~ Perspectives for Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia Zuzanna Bukowy-Bieryllo, Michal Witt and Ewa Zietkiewicz
The PCD Artist Project is a collaborative effort by artist to raise awareness for PCD or primary ciliary dyskinesia and support the PCD Smiles program. Each artist who submitted art work to the project either has PCD or has a PCD friend or family member.
