Today’s featured artist is Lincoln Nadeau with his submission titled “Win with PCD Power”.

“Cilia are tiny hair-like structures on the surface of cells in many parts of the body, including the lungs. When they are functioning correctly, cilia beat together in a wave-like motion to move mucus, germs and other foreign particles up toward the mouth where they can be coughed or sneezed out. People with PCD are born with genetic mutations that cause defects in the cilia so that they are unable to beat properly. This is called dyskinesia. As a result, mucus builds up in the lungs, where it can cause infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia. Repeated infections can cause damage to the lungs and airways and lead to the development of bronchiectasis in almost all adults with PCD.” ~ American Lung Association

“PCD is an inherited disorder, meaning that people born with the disease receive a mutated (abnormal) gene from both parents. In PCD, mutations in the genes responsible for building cilia and controlling their function result in cilia that do not work effectively. Dyskinesia, or impaired movement, is the most common ciliary defect seen in PCD. Other defects may lead to not having enough cilia on each airway cell, which can also cause the clinical symptoms seen in PCD.” ~ American Thoracic Society

“Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) causes respiratory disease that occurs in the lungs, nasal and sinus passages and ear canals. This leads to continuous nasal congestion and coughing. More than 75% of full-term infants with PCD have trouble breathing right after birth (neonatal respiratory distress) and require extra oxygen. On-going (chronic) airway infections begin in early childhood and can lead to permanent damage (bronchiectasis). Nasal congestion, sinus infections, and ear infections also begin in early childhood and continue throughout adulthood. Nearly all people with PCD will cough frequently.” ~ National Institute of Health
