”Airway clearance therapy is used to keep the lung tissue healthy for as long as possible. This therapy may include routine washing and suctioning of the sinus cavities and ear canals. Antibiotics, bronchodilators, steroids and mucus thinners (mucolytics) are also used to treat PCD. Routine hearing evaluation is important for young children and speech therapy and hearing aids may appropriate for children with hearing loss and speech problems. Lung transplantation is an option for severe, advanced lung disease. Surgery may be indicated if heart defects are present. ” ~ National Organization for Rare Disorders

 Hello everyone... hope my artwork brings a smile on your face. My name is Ashveen Kaur and I'm 19. I feel very lucky and blessed to be a part of this group. I have Kartagener Syndrome which involves PCD. I'm from India, a developing country, where people and most of the doctors are unaware about this and that's why I got to know my case properly when I was 18. As I started using social media, I got to know its power and through that I discovered people who have these cases and are full of positivity and smiles. And it has given me much satisfaction. I do art. And it is how I started using social media. And on instagram I found a wonderful personality Alessandra (ALE) as her son also has the Kartagener Syndrome. She guided me much and gave me a strong hope. I joined various PCD related groups on Facebook. And then I got to know about this beautiful initiative and then I made this artwork as a little contribution from my side. Humanity, love and happiness is something that can cure anything in the world. And I truly believe this. And I hope all of you stay strong and win this fight and bring greater smiles on your face. Virtual hugs❤ and I truly want to spread the knowledge about these cases so that more and more people get aware about it and it's treatments. Maybe in future, I get to travel outside India and meet fantastic warriors and put a little contribution from my side and I truly believe that day would come soon.❤

“The magnitude symptoms of primary ciliary dyskinesia vary in affected individuals. Symptoms often begin shortly after birth and can include coughing, gagging, choking and lung atelectasis (neonatal respiratory distress). Affected individuals often experience chronic sinus, middle ear and lung infections as well as chronic coughing, excess mucus and hearing loss. The recurring respiratory infections can lead to an irreversible scarring and dilatation in the bronchi (bronchiectasis) and severe lung damage.” ~ National Organization for Rare Disorders

“Primary ciliary (SIL-e-ar-e) dyskinesia (dis-kih-NE-ze-ah), or PCD, is a rare disease that affects tiny, hair-like structures that line the airways. These structures are called cilia (SIL-e-ah). Cilia move together in wave-like motions. They carry mucus (a slimy substance) toward the mouth to be coughed or sneezed out of the body. The mucus contains inhaled dust, bacteria, and other small particles. If the cilia don't work well, bacteria stay in your airways. This can cause breathing problems, infections, and other disorders. PCD mainly affects the sinuses, ears, and lungs. Some people who have PCD have breathing problems from the moment of birth. Sperm cells have structures that are like cilia. In men who have PCD, these structures also may not work well. This can cause fertility problems. "Fertility" refers to the ability to have children. Fertility problems also occur in some women who have PCD. These problems likely are due to faulty cilia in the fallopian tubes. (The fallopian tubes carry eggs from the ovaries to the uterus.)” ~ National Institute of Health
